Like most happy holy days\, the Baha’i New Year usually includes singing\, eating\, dancing and socializing. Because Naw-Ruz also marks the end of the 19-day Baha’i Fast\, it brings a warm\, diverse and fascinating group of people together to eat with one another\, celebrate\, have fun\, enjoy each other’s company and truly welcome the exciting\, unlimited possibilities of a new year.

SUMMARY:Fasting - Month of `Ala'
DESCRIPTION:Bahá’u’lláh designated a nineteen-day period each year during which adult Bahá’ís fast from sunrise to sunset each day. This period coincides with the Bahá’í month of Alá—meaning Loftiness—from 2 to 20 March\, which immediately precedes the Bahá’í new year. It is a time of spiritual rejuvenation. \nFasting has been a significant practice of religion throughout human history. Many of the Manifestations of God Themselves went through a period of meditation and fasting at some point in Their lives during which\, in intense communion with God\, They contemplated the mysteries of the universe and the nature of Their mission. \nFasting\, said ‘Abdu’l-Bahá “is the cause of awakening man. The heart becomes tender and the spirituality of man increases. This is produced by the fact that man’s thoughts will be confined to the commemoration of God\, and through this awakening and stimulation surely ideal advancements follow”. \nHowever\, it is important to note that fasting should not be viewed as a practice of asceticism\, nor is it to be used as a means of penance: “This material fast is an outer token of the spiritual fast; it is a symbol of self-restraint\, the withholding of oneself from all appetites of the self\, taking on the characteristics of the spirit\, being carried away by the breathings of heaven and catching fire from the love of God.”

SUMMARY:Intercalary Days - Ayyam-i-Ha
DESCRIPTION:Ayyam-i-Ha\, or the Intercalary Days\, is a period dedicated to socializing\, being hospitable\, giving generously to the poor and needy\, and preparing for the upcoming month of fasting. Depending on the year\, Ayyam-i-Ha will vary in its duration and it is composed of the excess of days that fall outside of the 19 months of 19 days (if you’re curious\, here’s more information about the Baha’i\, or Badi\, Calendar). In the Kitab-i-Aqdas\, Baha’u’llah writes: \nLet the days in excess of the months be placed before the month of fasting. We have ordained that these\, amid all nights and days\, shall be the manifestations of the letter Ha\, and thus they have not been bounded by the limits of the year and its months. It behooveth the people of Baha\, throughout these days\, to provide good cheer for themselves\, their kindred and\, beyond them\, the poor and needy\, and with joy and exultation to hail and glorify their Lord\, to sing His praise and magnify His Name; and when they end—these days of giving that precede the season of restraint—let them enter upon the Fast.
